Headaches, known as cephalalgia in medical terminology, are one of the most common forms of local pain experienced by everyone at some point in their life. Medical dictionaries define headaches as a condition of pain in the head, with the pain generally being focussed above the eyes or the ears, behind the head (occipital), or in the back of the upper neck.
There can be several causes of headaches, some of the more common causes being tension, migraine, eye strain, dehydration, low blood sugar, hypermastication and sinusitis. Some rarer causes of headaches are due to life-threatening conditions such as meningitis, encephalitis, cerebral aneurysms, extremely high blood pressure, and brain tumors. Headaches could also occur as a result of head injury. Women often get troubled with headaches due to fluctuating estrogen level during menstrual years.
